'Forrest Gump' actor Sinise to raise money for vet (AP)

TEMECULA, Calif. ? Actor Gary Sinise, known for playing a soldier who loses his legs in the film "Forrest Gump," wants to stage a benefit concert to raise money to build a home in Temecula, Calif., for a Marine who lost his limbs in Afghanistan.

The Los Angeles Times reports ( http://lat.ms/Aw0bi1) that Sinise, now starring in TV's "CSI New York," is expected to ask the Temecula City Council on Tuesday if he can hold a concert tentatively on March 1.

Sinise's Lt. Dan Band, named for his movie character, would perform and raise money for Marine Lance Cpl. Juan Dominguez, who lost his legs and right arm in 2010.

The Gary Sinise Foundation and the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation have built several such homes for wounded veterans.

Cake contest marks New Mexico centennial

SILVER CITY - Silver City MainStreet's Centennial Cake Contest was a big hit Friday night at the Silco, with 35 entries and nine winners in three categories.

"I couldn't believe the response we got," said Silver City MainStreet Manager Nick Seibel. "We had hoped we could do something big for the state's Centennial, but you never how the community is going to respond. We had bigger crowds than we anticipated for every single event, from the cake contest to the silent movie to the dance with Brandon Perrault."

The cake contest, organized by Silver City MainStreet, was part of an entire day of Centennial events in downtown Silver City, from activities for kids at the Silver City Museum, to a one-man play at the Seedboat Center for the Arts to a host of events at the Silco Theater.

Silver City's Centennial Celebration also fell on Silver's First Friday event so MainStreet took the lead in organizing the day's events, with help from many members of the community.

"The committee that planned the Centennial Celebration included people from WNMU, The Silver City Public Library, Silver City Museum, the Daughters of the American Revolution ... you name it. It was a great committee of people that worked really hard to make it happen," Seibel said.

The cake contest, organized by Seibel, MainStreet member Laurie Bentley, and Silver City Museum volunteer Liz Mikols, featured three categories of bakers: professional, recreational and youth, with three winners in each category.

"There were so many wonderful cakes," said Lucy Whitmarsh, president of Silver City MainStreet. "We wanted the Centennial Cake Contest to be a community event, so it was great to see how many participated in it."

During the event, Silver City Mayor James Marshall read the Proclamation Declaring Statehood date in Silver City, and the HiLo Silver's performed.

"It was a great night, overall," said Seibel. "It was great to see how much of the community turned out."

Christine Steele can be reached at (575) 538-5893, ext. 5802.

Selling Apple In October Wasn?t The Best Move, But Not Buying Google Was Worse

Sagging EconomyMG Siegler argues that if you sold your Apple stock last October, right after the company's Q4 2011 earnings report, you are an idiot and/or a moron. After all, Apple's stock price closed at $398.62 on October 19, and it closed at $422.4 last Friday (a respectable 6 percent bump). So selling your Apple stock that day was idiotic, right? Maybe, maybe not. Flamebait headlines aside, for all we know you could have been selling Apple stock you acquired back in 2000, in which case I daresay you were a true visionary. Of if you spent the money to buy your kids and spouse some nice Christmas gifts, or treated yourself to that plane ticket to Cambodia or whatever. Reality is that, yes, Apple stock was oversold that day, but I'll be damned if I'm calling anyone an idiot over doing it if I don't know what you did with the money.

The year's most anticipated new arrival is finally here: Beyoncé Knowles and Jay-Z (nee Shawn Carter) welcomed Ivy Blue Carter, a healthy baby girl, into the world on Saturday (January 7).

The couple's first child was born in New York at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital, according to E! News.

Beyoncé surprised and delighted fans around the world back in September when she not-so-subtly announced her pregnancy on our very own VMA stage.

Rumors have been swirling about the sex of the new bundle of joy since Beyoncé's close friend and former Destiny's Child member Kelly Rowland let it slip that "it" might be a "she."

"I have no idea what I'm going to buy Beyoncé at the baby shower because Jay is going to buy that little girl every single thing possible," she told told U.K. news agency Bang Showbiz. "She won't be spoiled, but she will be very well looked-after."

Fans are just as excited for Jay and B's bundle of joy. MTV News spoke to some of them recently, and many said that they expect the newborn to jump right to the top of the celebrity baby power list.

"A power baby, obviously," one fan said of the youngster's assumed superstar status, while another added, "It's gonna be a pretty cool baby, that's for sure. Probably gonna run New York City by the time he's 13 or 14."

Share your congratulations for Beyoncé and Jay-Z on our Facebook page!
