From lice in the trenches to spiders in the jungle ? soldiers in wartime have more than just the enemy to watch out for.

This Easter, IWM North, part of Imperial War Museums, in Manchester has a swarm of activities for all the family. Battling Bugs, a 3 week long Family Festival, explores the creepy crawlies faced by troops in wartime, as well as the battle against bacteria faced by sickly soldiers.

Boys and girls who want more excitement than the Easter Bunny can provide should explore the wartime world of bugs and critters, every day from 23 March to 14 April.

Free activities for all the family include storytelling, performances and creative sessions throughout the school holidays ? as well as the chance to get up close and personal with real life creatures.

At 2pm every day from Tuesday 2 to Saturday 6 April, join in with entertaining, family friendly presentations from people whose job it is to battle bugs. Discover what you can do to stay clear of icky infections. ?Experts from the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine will help in these free, fun Bothersome Bugs sessions.

Throughout the day on Thursday 4 and Friday 5 April, families can roll up, roll up, for a tiny circus with a big difference. ?Almost 100 years ago, many First World War soldiers were pestered by fleas while they fought on the front line. Now, you can see the lighter side of creepy crawlies in IWM North?s visiting flea circus.

Become an Insect Inspector on Wednesday 10 April. Get up close to real preserved insect specimens with a visiting curator from Manchester Museum. ?Join our creative activities and learn how lice, mice and all things nasty affect life on the front line. You can even make your own creature to scuttle home with you.

Anyone exploring foreign terrain might be surprised by incredible insects, even soldiers and relief workers. Therefore the Battling Bugs Family Festival finale will take place from 12-4pm on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 April, as IWM North hosts The Creepy Crawly Show. All the family can join in with this mix of comedy, music, jungle challenges and real live creatures.

Storytelling sessions and creative activities will run every day throughout the Festival. Why not bring your family to IWM North to discover the roles of rats, cats and bees in wartime; or hear slimy stories of slug, snails and truce time tales? ?Puppets, sounds and props are used to captivate, entertain and inspire all ages.

Families can test their smelling skills in Action Stations in the IWM North Main Exhibition Space, while TimeStacks object handling sessions allow families to get hands on with real items from IWM?s collections.

Meanwhile, a range of books and pocket money purchases are available in the IWM North shop to help families continue the learning and entertainment at home.
